Bakersfield, Ca, September, 2005

THB Design Associates has teamed with Kern Steel Fabrication of Bakersfield, California to design and manufacture a C-5 Aircraft Mobile Empennage Stand for the United States Air Force. The C-5 Empennage Stand will allow maintenance personnel to gain full access to the tail of the C-5 Aircraft. The tail of the C-5 Aircraft requires a stand approximately 70 feet tall and 77 feet wide at the horizontal stabilizer access level. The stand will have 6 working levels and will boast such features as a 1500 lb Jib Hoist, a Freight & Crew Elevator and an Enclosed Workroom.

The stand is completely autonomous and will be driven by two geared hydrostatic motors which are powered by an onboard diesel power unit. The stand will be controlled by means of a local PLC control console, which will operate all main functions including the stand’s steering and drive systems.

Each deck section will contain semi-automatic deck sliders which can be adjusted to conform to the plane's unique geometry. The stand also features four leveling screw jacks that will allow the operator to level the stand once in position. Most importantly, the stand will be loaded with many safety features from an automated folding fence system to a multi-level personnel fall protection system. Following a rigorous testing program outlined by the Air Force, the first stand should be delivered within the first quarter of 2007.
